Multitasking is a myth: the brain can't do two conscious tasks at once

«I get more done when I do several things at once». CVs demand multitasking, messengers ping every five minutes, and your head spins with work, kids, news, and a shopping list. If it feels like you’ll fail without parallel mode — that’s not weakness or «lazy focus». The brain doesn’t process two conscious tasks in parallel — it only switches very fast. And switching has a cost for the nervous system.

Why multitasking feels normal

The 21st century expects career, family, gym, news feed, chats — and eight hours of sleep. Job posts list «stress tolerance and multitasking» as if they were the same thing. While you juggle ten «balls», it really feels like you’re getting more done.

But the brain isn’t a ten-core computer. It doesn’t hold two complex attention streams at once. It jumps: email → call → email again. Outwardly — «I’m on top of everything». Inwardly — a prefrontal cortex without pauses, like a dispatcher who can’t close tabs. This overlaps with fatigue and burnout, but here the focus isn’t «I sleep little» — it’s switching mode.

Experiment: counting, alphabet, and 1-a-2-b

Step 1. Count from 1 to 20 as fast as you can, silently or aloud.

Step 2. Say the alphabet at the same pace: a, b, c…

Step 3. Alternate: 1 — a, 2 — b, 3 — c… for 10–15 pairs.

On step three, discomfort almost always appears: the brain stumbles, you want to stop. You literally feel the moment you must switch from numbers to letters and back. Now imagine that mode lasting all workday: mail, meeting, messenger, report, mail again.

Task-switching research has long shown: each switch costs time and attention. We don’t get faster — we make more mistakes and take longer to return to deep focus. The productivity illusion holds while resource still lasts.

Why can't the brain do two tasks at once?

The brain can’t do two conscious tasks at once because executive control — prefrontal cortex and related networks — handles one intentional attention stream at a time. The second task isn’t «in the background»: it waits in queue or pushes the first out.

Metaphor: one spotlight in the dark. You can move it quickly between two objects, but you can’t shine on both at full brightness simultaneously. Multitasking is running the spotlight, not having two.

The cost of switching all day

Before entering a new task, the brain must brake the previous one — the course describes this via inhibitory neurotransmitters (including serotonin). Simply: switching isn’t a «click» but a micro-effort. Once — fine. Hundreds of times a day — accumulated load.

Notifications, short videos, ten open tabs — all train the brain to switch, not deepen. The habit sticks: rest, meals, conversation — also «on the go», phone in hand.

From «I can't keep up» to burnout

While resource lasts, juggling feels heroic. When reserves drop, tasks take longer, pleasure fades, procrastination appears — the brain avoids energy-heavy work.

Typical trap: «I’m doing nothing, I must pull myself together» → more list items → more switching → less result → more guilt. Multitasking as habit leads to burnout: not always because «too much work», but because too many switches without recovery.

What to do today

Remember the experiment’s conclusion. In 1-a-2-b mode you’re objectively less effective. Not morality — switching physiology. When you want to open a second task «for a minute», recall step three’s discomfort.
One everyday monotask. Wash a cup without a podcast. Eat without a screen. Drive one stretch without music. Lesson wisdom: «When washing a cup — think about the cup». Resistance («boring!») signals overstimulation, not weakness.
One 25–40 minute block — one task. Remove incoming channels. Not «perfect deep work» — one closed cycle without switching. Done — short break, then the next tab.
«Alphabet walk» (micro version). On a short walk, repeat letters with a word: a — apple, b — ball… When thoughts drift — gently return to the letter. This trains braking distractions.

Is it true the brain can't multitask?

For two tasks requiring conscious attention — yes. Automatic actions (walking and talking) can combine, but two «thinking» streams — no: only fast switching with quality loss and rising fatigue.

Why is it so hard to focus after switching?

Part of attention stays on the previous task (attention residue), plus the brain needs time to re-enter deep mode. More interruptions mean more of the day spent «spinning up», not producing.

Are multitasking and burnout linked?

Chronic switching exhausts executive control and the nervous system. Irritability, procrastination, guilt follow — a typical chain toward burnout, especially if load doesn’t decrease.

How to start monotasking if it's «boring» without a phone?
